Repetitive strain injury (RSI)
describes a
range of musculoskeletal conditions such as carpal tunnel,
tendonitis, and thoracic outlet syndrome. RSI occurs as a result
of repetitive motions sustained over weeks, months, or even
years which can cause temporary or permanent damage to soft
tissues (muscles, tendons, ligaments,
and
fascia)as
well as nerves. Symptoms
range from mild aches to
sharp pain, burning sensations, numbness and tingling,
diminished range of motion, and diminished muscle strength. An
RSI can be exacerbated by repetitive non-work activities such as
playing a musical instrument or knitting. Because an RSI can be
complex and may involve more than one part of the body,
obtaining a skilled clinical evaluation is important.
